I enjoyed the Lemony Snicket series, as well as "Why We Broke Up." Handler writes well about adolescents' lives. The first two-thirds of this book is an interesting story about the difficulties of one teenage girl's life, but then the story takes a turn that I felt didn't fit the tone of the book. The blurb for the book sums this up this problem well: "...it's about a teenage girl who pulls together a ragtag crew to commit mayhem in the San Francisco Bay." The wry tone suggests some harmless "mayhem," but that is not what the reader gets. For me, it detracted from what was a touching, perceptive novel about an adolescent life. Still, a worthwhile read.

We Are Pirates had a really different and entertaining plot. It was filled with surprises.
Different. Could have been better with another re-write but I enjoyed the book. Just never found its rhythm.
We Are Pirates held my attention from beginning to end. It surprised me, entertained me, and left me wanting more.
Very Disappointing. I never finished the book and eventually threw it away.
It's a bit of a slow burn. The first third is a bit muddled and tough to get through. Once the big thing happens though it rolls through pretty well. I really enjoyed it, though it felt sort of like Handler threw in some R-rated content just to make it less of an all ages book. I have nothing against r-rated content, it just seemed forced in and awkward. I'm still looking forward to whatever he puts out next!
I enjoy Handler's work for adults -- he also writes as "Lemony Snicket," of course -- and find each of his novels unique and surprising. This one follows two 14-year-old girls who decide to become pirates in San Francisco. Their innocence and determination are very believable, as is the story's dark turn. My reaction wasn't "this can't happen," but "no one else would dare write this happening." Much of the novel's humor comes from Handler's deft phrasing and incisive analogies, but the story has a serious side that jars our sensibilities and expectations. Those who want a conventional and predictable novel about teens and how they relate to the world should look elsewhere.
Daniel Handler draws us in with the same kind of omniscient but flawed storytelling voice as he does when writing as Lemony Snicket and the promise of a grand, romantic pirate tale. Because at this time in American history, we expect certain things in a pirate story, as Gwen and Amber know very well.

Handler tells a great pirate story. It's probably not the one you expected, but it's one worth reading.
