Not really what I was expecting, but pretty witty anyway. Not my type of book but was compelled to continue reading, just to see where it was going (and going, and going...). Way too many references to Johnny Depp, drinking, cats, vampires, reality TV, and other stereotypical examples of young lovers' obsessions. It did go on and on too much for me, I think he made his point early on. That said, I did enjoy his sarcasm, even if overdone. I also liked some of the quotes by various people about the nature of love and life. There was some truth to all his rambling which made it readable to a degree. I think he could have used some of it for a stand-up comedy routine. I kept hearing the punchline drumbeats in my head - badaboom! Reminded me of some late night TV host stuff maybe, or Seinfeld wannabe material. Anyway, I would pass on it next time in spite of the good (funny) points.Tags : Pretending to Love: How to Cheat Your Way to Relationship Bliss! Ashton Carwright has a great sense of humor and a great way to present his humor in this well written book. Very seldom do I laugh out loud when I'm reading, but this book sure did! I recommend this book to anyone that would like a good laugh, in fact I recommend it to anyone that doesn't like to laugh, I'm sure it will bring a smile to your face. HAPPY READING!!!!!!!
I downloaded the version of this book because my friend said it was hilarious, and she was 100% correct! It's really funny all the way through, and is clearly a parody of every "fix your relationship" book ever written. I even ended up buying a copy of the paperback version to give to a friend for his birthday. Well recommended!
I have been married 16 years come February and We have been together a total of 22 years and I Love This Book !!!! And just to let You knows You are not alone. My favorite quote (mine) " I will get married when I am old and gray and nothing else better to live for". Yes I was reminded of statement many times over the years. Great Book !!
Pretending to Love How to Cheat Your Way to Relationship Bliss!
by Ashton Cartwright
I purchased this book for my thinking it was to be a silly, feather-light humor book. After reading it, I realize it is nothing of the kind. This slim tome is filled with pithy wisdom, penetrating insights, and stunning artwork.
Pithy Wisdom "Relationships have been the single biggest cause of stress, failure, heartache, indebtedness, and outright physical revulsion since one amoeba decided to merge cellular walls with another ..." How true, and how heart-rendingly expressed!
Penetrating Insights Male cartoon's thoughts "I am bald, fat, and unwashed, yet I still consider myself attractive." Female cartoon's thoughts "I am beautiful, sophisticated, and intelligent, yet I still consider myself unattractive!" One wonders how a man so young could have such deep understanding of the inner lives of cartoons.
Stunning Artwork The book is punctuated with droll ironic cartoon couples, expertly drawn to seem at first to be virtually identical, but upon further inspection to be exactly alike. How incisive is this commentary on our self-importance and the author's limited graphics abilities!
Ashton Cartwright has created a form of humor never seen before. A single look at his author's portrait reveals a tortured, sensitive young man obviously deeply wounded by unrequited and spurned love. But this plucky talent has given us here a written guide book to the minefields we call romance.
Way to go, Ashton!
As a writer, I know how challenging it often is to be funny on paper versus face-to-face.
Pretending to Love succeeds in being very funny because it feels like Ashton is talking to me when I read it (bear in mind that I don't know Ashton from Adam).
I predict you will laugh out loud on numerous occasions while reading Pretending to Love. As much as I hate to admit it, I found a lot of truth and a lot of myself (the younger version) in these pages. But, as we all know, part of what makes something very funny is that there is always a grain of truth in it!
I hope Cartwright creates a series of mock self-help books like this one; I'll be waiting to read them.
If you are looking for a book about how to help your relationship, go and look up the words "cynical" and "satire" on google, then come back here and buy this book anyway, while it may not help you out in your relationship, at least it will make you laugh.
I don't normally laugh out loud when I read, but this book made me do just that. And there were parts where I wanted to just read paragraphs out to the nearest people (unfortunately I was on a train most of the time I was reading this, and I looked around, but the surly-faced bloke sitting near me in his tweed jacket just didn't seem like he would fully appreciate me giving him the advice as per the book).
Great tongue-in-cheek look at relationship self help books. Probably sums up the authors thoughts on that genre of writing quite well. Though I did think that there were certain sections that described me to a tee... (so what if I am a WoW player, play DnD and am a Chuck Norris joke connoisseur).
While you may not get useful relationship advice, you will hopefully get a good chuckle, I know I did.
