I'm very disappointed in the RAVE reviews for this book.....I am also aware that only a few are actual Anmazon purchased. I did purchase this book on Amazon, and I hate it. I can't finish it for it's simplistic and basically stupid writing style.
What concerns me about the "reviews" is they are very long.....like these people know what they are talking about. I can't imagine that serious literary critics of historical fiction could give this book anything higher than a 2. Makes me wonder........ What I can tell you about me is I taught high school English for over 10 years, and I know about good writing skills and bad.
To start, English is the most redundant writer that I have read. I learned in 8th grade about redundancy! By page 41, Eleanor wanted to to did spit up bile at least 5 times. Yep.....5 times in 41 pages. Get real!
English writes in the first tense, so the book is filled with "I this.....I that....I'm going to do this. The tone of the book is like a little punk kid wrote it. And be warned, you will read dozens of times by page 100 of how Eleanor knows how beautiful she is.
English is so inconsistent in descriptions. For example: on page 134, English is writing about Eleanor walking through the streets of Paris to get to the king. She writes: "....but the people were happy to greet me. Even without my crowns they knew at once who I was, and they called and waved to me as they had not the day we entered Paris." Then three paragraphs later, she continues writing about Eleanor's walk and writes, "I nodded to the Parisians who stood and stared at me as I passed, but I did not waver, I knew where I was going." According to page 134, the Parisians were waiving and calling her name. Then all of a sudden they are staring at her to the point that Eleanor wasn't going to waver....? The book thus far has been as ridiculous.
I have read several OUTSTANDING novels on Eleanor. I am surprised that reviewers on Amazon are acting like this is an amazing accomplishment and huge ordeal. It isn't.
Save your money. If anything, spend a few bucks and get the kindle if you have some time to waste reading.

Great read!
I just adore Christy English novels.
I enjoyed it very much, started off a little slow in the beginning but by the end I was loving it! Good read- wish she had a follow up to this novel
Fun historical fiction about my 24 times great grandmother
For people interested in the life and times of Eleanor of Aquitaine, this is a refreshingly different look at her life. Popular fiction is strongly focused on Eleanor's glittering marriage with Henry II and their fiery children, but rarely is her earlier life in Aquitaine and marriage to Louis of France explored.

This is an entertaining novel, true to details and which allows us to almost imagine Eleanor's early life, and fills in those early gaps that fiction otherwise misses. We are given a glimpse of the steel which carried Eleanor through her remarkable and long life, and allowed her to rule in Henry's stead when he was away from his kingdom. We also, sadly, are shown some of her early tragedies, including her affection for her French daughters, never seen again once she left Louis. Recommended.
Don't get me wrong, the writing isn't at all bad. I just didn't like the characters. I was hoping for a book similar to Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction and this just wasn't it. I really did not care for the main players and the story ends leaving you with a rather sad image. I just couldn't get into it. I hate to write a bad review, but I wanted to give my honest opinion. Ms. English has promise as a writer in my opinion.....just perhaps a bit more time in the character development area.
I loved this novel based upon the early life of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Most novels about this intriguing Queen focus upon the relationship between her and Henry II, therefore it was refreshing to read of her life before she married this volatile King.
Ms English portrayed Eleanor as a woman who was not afraid to take hold of her life in both hands. She demonstrated this by her success in negotiating a marriage with the King of France, even after the death of her father. In a world dominated by men Eleanor strove to make her own choices, with the determination to see things through to the end. I loved her character and very much enjoyed reading her story. Ms English did an excellent job developing Eleanor's character.
The character of King Louis was also an interesting figure to read of. In many ways he reminded me of another King Louis of France--son of Blanche of Castille, who was coincidentally Eleanor's grand-daughter. Both men shared a piousness that hindered them in the bedroom and both men went on crusade. Also, both men took their wives with them.
One of the best parts of this novel was the depiction of the journey to the Holy Land. Eleanor and Louis travelled through Germany to reach Constantinople and than travelled on to Antioch, where Eleanor's uncle was King. The descriptions of Constantinople in particular were alluring. The opulence and exoticism were wonderfully portrayed by the author. Eleaor remarks upon the magnificence of the Palace yet inwardly rebels against the separation between the men and the women. As a woman of politics she did not like to rendered obsolete.
Overall, I can honestly say that I loved every second of this novel. Eleanor's character was brought to life for me and I came to admire her as a courageous and determined woman. Considering the time period in which she lived it is no wonder that she made so many enemies. This insight into her early life allowed me to see her become the survivor that she was, enduring everything that life threw at her. She was a remarkable woman.
